The Specific What

Kairos Project 17SM (KP17) is a social enterprise company that was developed from a passion to assist people out of situational homelessness and into homes that they can both afford and take an equity position in. Most of the people who buy homes from Kairos Project 17 are not eligible for traditional mortgages. Our financing allows them to become equity holders. This is extremely empowering—as it spills over into other areas of their lives by reducing stress and allowing them to focus on their children, jobs and individual lives. They are no longer subject to the unpredictable low-income housing markets, unpredictable landlords and the intense daily stress that those variables cause.

The Kairos Project 17 will provide an environment where families can purchase a home, oftentimes for the same monthly amount that they would pay to rent.

Out of this business model, we hope to:

• Create an environment for generational and ideological shifts.
• We accomplish this by assisting to provide an environment where families can thrive, not just survive. Where children can feel safe and secure, playing, completing homework, having family dinners. When this occurs—and children have an environment where they can succeed—they are less likely to follow the same path as their parents.
• Reduce the number of homeless families and youth in communities.
• Assist families and youth who are ready* in becoming equity holders. Families and youth who prefer to rent are also served by Kairos Project 17.

All of our homes will be tested for toxins and renovated when needed to accommodate the purchases that can be “deal breakers” for new home buyers, e.g., new furnaces, water heaters, windows, etc. We believe in not only assisting in putting a roof over your head, but providing one that promotes dignity and respect. In addition, the “cultural stigma” of renting from a low-income housing or “Section 8” status is removed. Assimilation into school and work communities is eased.

The Name

Kairos Project 17 (KP17) was inspired by James 2:14-17 which reads:

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action [kairos], is dead.”

The Bible uses the word kairos and its cognates 86 times in the New Testament (e.g., in Matthew 8:29; Luke 19:44; and Acts 24:25). The word often includes the idea of an opportunity or a suitable time for an action to take place. When we “seize the day,” we are taking advantage of the kairos given to us. Kairos is related to the Greek word kara (“head”). A kairos is a time when things “come to a head,” requiring decisive action. And “let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time [kairos] we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

The number 17 refers to the year 2017. This was the first year we saw some of the homeless people in our community actually sobbing while they were walking to a destination. Not crying, sobbing; shoulder-shaking, face-burning, tear-flowing sobbing. We decided that 2017 was the year we needed to do something to assist the homeless families and youth within our communities. This is the year of Kairos.
